At a quiet Georgia army base, Major Welden Penderton (Marlon Brando) shows no interest in his wife, Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor), so she takes a lover – her husband's superior officer (Brian Keith), whose neurotic wife (Julie Harris) rarely leaves her sickbed. Meanwhile, the repressed Penderton lusts after handsome Private Williams (Robert Forster), a mysterious young man whose secret obsession with Leonora reaches a terrifyingly dangerous climax.
